2026 Open Source Professionals Job Survey Report

Open source software plays a crucial role in organizations worldwide. Thus, it is important to understand what motivates those who work with it.

The third Open Source Professional Job Survey (OSPJS), carried out by Open Source JobHub (OSJH) and Linux Professional Institute (LPI), asked respondents about their current job roles and level of experience, and to rate the importance of ten factors when choosing a job. The survey also asked whether organizational sustainability measures and artificial intelligence (AI) might impact their work.

Respondents placed strong importance on professional fulfillment, work-life balance, company culture and values, high wages, and professional learning opportunities. They also considered guidance on using and contributing to open source software and opportunities to work remotely as highly important, while their views on sustainability measures and AI’s impact somewhat varied.

This report summarizes the findings of the 2026 OSPJS and presents key conclusions.
