As Linux Professional Institute (LPI) celebrates 25 years of empowering open source professionals, we at GreekLUG—now in our 15th year—are proud to stand with LPI at this milestone. Together, we’ve fostered a growing community dedicated to advancing Linux and Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), spreading knowledge, and creating inclusive opportunities for tech enthusiasts, students, and professionals alike.
GreekLUG, the “Greek Association of Free Software / Open Source Software Users,” is a volunteer-led group that has, since 2009, been passionately dedicated to sharing and promoting FOSS in Greece. Through courses, seminars, and hands-on activities, we aim to educate and inspire the public on topics ranging from GNU/Linux to open source hardware, privacy, and cutting-edge technology like 3D printing.
Our approach combines education with community service. Beyond training sessions, we’re committed to giving back through tech support and hardware donations, particularly to schools and other organizations in need.
GreekLUG’s journey began with a small group of like-minded individuals who came together in 2008-2009 as the Thessaloniki Linux User Group (The.L.U.G). This collective enthusiasm laid the foundation for what would become GreekLUG, establishing our first “GNU/Linux Computer Lab” in Thessaloniki—a space where anyone can explore Linux and other FOSS tools firsthand.
Today, our GNU/Linux Lab remains the heart of our organization, located at 96 Egnatia Street, Thessaloniki. Here we continue to host workshops, provide support for anyone wishing to install Linux or troubleshoot FOSS issues, and offer a welcoming space for exploration and learning.
Our recent activities highlight our commitment to making technology accessible and useful for all. A few examples include:
On Wednesdays at our Lab, we also hold a “MidWeek Support” session, where anyone can drop in to troubleshoot their systems, install Linux, or learn how to configure FOSS applications.
Our relationship with LPI has been a valuable one, reinforcing our ability to connect the Greek community with international resources and recognition. Over the years, we have evolved from an LPI Master Affiliate in the Western Balkans region to becoming a Community Partner. This partnership enables us to offer members access to globally recognized certifications, educational content, and support for professional development. We look ahead to a continued successful partnership that benefits both organizations and our members.
