Why I Joined the LPI Board of Directors — Ricardo Prudenciato

Since the beginning of my career, I have always recognized the significant value of professional certifications. They have consistently served as guides in my studies and professional development, while also standing out as notable additions to my resume, demonstrating initiative, proactiveness, and professionalism.

My journey with professional certifications began in 2009 when I first obtained my LPIC-1 certification. This milestone had a profound impact on my career, validating my expertise and opening doors to new opportunities, including career advancement and salary growth. I have always encouraged my colleagues and students to pursue certifications as a way to structure their learning and strengthen their professional paths.

Since 2017, I have been actively involved in the community by providing training focused on LPI certifications (LPIC-1, LPIC-2, and LPIC-3). Teaching these courses has been incredibly rewarding, as I have witnessed firsthand how certifications help professionals gain confidence, develop skills, and achieve career success.

In 2022, I decided to take my commitment to the next level by running for a position on the LPI Board of Directors. My main motivation was to contribute more actively to the LPI community by ensuring that the real needs and challenges faced by IT professionals were represented at the decision-making level. I wanted to help shape policies, improve certification programs, and expand LPI’s reach in different regions and industries.

The Role and Impact of LPI Board Members

Being part of the Board is an enriching experience. It provides the opportunity to interact with professionals from diverse backgrounds, contribute to key discussions, and help shape the future of LPI. Board members play a crucial role in governance, financial oversight, and long-term strategic planning, always striving to improve and expand LPI’s impact in the Open Source community.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this role is the opportunity to participate in initiatives that make certifications more valuable to professionals worldwide. Whether by supporting updates, developing new exams, fostering partnerships, or participating in specific committees and events, Board members help ensure that LPI continues to serve the needs of the global IT community.

Time Commitment

Being a Board member requires some dedication, but it is a manageable commitment. We have monthly meetings to discuss and vote on relevant topics and resolutions, as well as to receive updates from the Executive Director and the staff.

Some members may have additional roles as officers, such as Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, or Treasurer. Members can also contribute by participating in committees and special projects based on their expertise and interests.

Why You Should Apply

LPI is always looking to build a diverse Board, both professionally and socially, to ensure balanced representation and effective governance. You may have valuable perspectives and expertise to contribute.

Have you had positive experiences with LPI? Do you understand particular communities of computer professionals, and can you represent their viewpoints? If you can see yourself in this role, I highly encourage you to consider applying for a board position. It is an excellent opportunity to give back to the Open Source and IT communities, influence and follow the direction of the institution, and collaborate with passionate individuals who share a common goal.
