The Linux Professional Institute (LPI) is a nonprofit corporation founded in Canada in 1999. We were created to be a global community-based certification body in support of professionals and professional standards in Linux and Open Source. Our programs are used and trusted by educators and courseware designers, and more than 600,000 exams delivered to over 160,000 certification holders in more than 180 countries and 9 languages. We work together with a global network of trainers, publishers, governments, partners and open source advocates.
No, “LPI-Japan” is a separate organization registered in Japan which previously held contracts to promote LPIC exams in the region. Though the contract has ended, we are aware that the organization continues to use the name “LPI-Japan” and the Internet domain “lpi.or.jp”. This is NOT the Linux Professional Institute or our website for Japan, which is https://www.lpi.org/ja.
“Educo” is a corporation registered in Japan and related to LPI Japan. “Educo” may also produce certification programs. Neither LPI-Japan nor Educo is affiliated with us, and certifications currently being offered by them — including programs for PostreSQL, OpenStack, LinuC and HTML — were not produced by or with LPI, nor have they undergone our quality processes. LinuC certifications available through Educo are not recognized by Linux Professional Institute and do not constitute an LPI Certification.
We apologize to anyone who have may been confused by the activities of other organizations. However, we have not changed. We remain committed, as the genuine and definitive global “LPI” certification body, to provide the best possible professional programs and support to the growth of open source as we have been doing for almost 20 years.
With the transition from the former contract with LPI-Japan, Linux Professional Institute works even more closely with our Japanese community of certification holders, candidates and partners. Linux Professional Institute celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2019. It continues to grow in Japan and around the world, introducing new certification programs and other initiatives to support our community of open source professionals. Our new activities include:
- DevOps Tools Engineer Certification in Japanese, first published October 2017
- Introduction of the Linux Essentials Certificate, first published globally in 2012, to Japan
- Continuing updates, expansion and increased language support for the LPI certifications
- membership and easier certification maintenance options

Get your LPI ID and go to Pearson VUE, get account (if you do not have one) and book exam. You can choose your language and test center there.

In 2~3 days after certificated, you can download it from the “Certification” section on My Account.
It takes 1 month after you get certified to deliver your certification. If you are waiting more than 1 month, please contact us: info-ja@lpi.org.
There is no change in active LPI certification. You can download your certification pdf at any time by logging in to the My Account As usual, you can take an exam through Pearson Vue. Even if you are currently holding a test voucher, you can continue using it.
