Toronto, 2025-02-25 — 25th anniversary celebrations, the official launch of the new Open Source Essentials certificate, translation of Learning Materials into more languages, expansion of global partnerships, events, and industry research: in its newly released Annual Review, Linux Professional Institute (LPI) provides insights into achievements and developments in 2024. The report can be downloaded as a PDF on the LPI website.
Turning 25—a major milestone in the history of Linux Professional Institute—was one of the highlights of 2024. To celebrate the anniversary, LPI launched a year-long campaign LPI25 with special offers and discounts for certificate holders and candidates. Throughout the year, LPI’s social media posts gained millions of impressions and received positive feedback from IT professionals worldwide. Some of them shared their success stories on the organization’s blog, describing how LPI certifications helped them start or advance their Linux and open source careers.
Following beta testing, Linux Professional Institute officially launched the Open Source Essentials Certificate exam in 2024. This new accreditation, the fourth in LPI’s suite of Essentials certificates, allows individuals to demonstrate expertise in open source community management, business, legal frameworks, licensing and culture, which is increasingly important in today’s professional landscape.
The global non-profit also continued to expand its free Learning Materials in 2024. Some new resources on learning.lpi.org are now available in Vietnamese, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, French, and Hungarian.
In collaboration with Linux New Media, LPI also released the first edition of The Open Source Professionals Job Survey Report, providing valuable career insights from nearly 600 open-source professionals. The report helped hiring managers design roles that better suit industry professionals.
The Annual Review also highlights key partnerships, updates on LPI Membership, volunteers’ participation, and events attended by the team in 2024. Throughout the year, LPI supported 31 global events, including the prestigious “Open Source Program Offices (OSPOs) for Good” conference at the United Nations in New York.
“LPI expresses its gratitude to the open source community, including its volunteers, partners, Board of Directors and staff, for their continued support and contributions to its success. Looking ahead, it remains committed to its mission to promote the use of open source by supporting the people who work with it,” says Executive Director, G. Matthew Rice
